The handle turns in micro increments, from 8.5 lb up to the maximum of the model, 52 lb on the 8552 and 92 lb on the 8592. One side of the plates shows kilograms and the other shows pounds.

The dumbbell also gets shorter at lighter loads, because the unused plates stay behind. At 8.5 lb it feels like a small fixed dumbbell, not a long bar.

We recommend you set them down, not drop them. The adjustment mechanism lives inside the handle, and a drop can knock it out of alignment.

Trulap covers one accidental drop as a courtesy. After that, drop damage is not covered under the 3 year warranty. Taking the handle apart also voids the warranty.

Put the dumbbell in its base, twist the handle to the weight you want, and lift. The plates you selected come with the handle. The rest stay in the base.

Always change weight in the base. Twisting the handle outside the base can release plates. After the twist, check that the plates sit flush against the handle before you lift.

Choose the 8552 if your heaviest dumbbell lifts stay under 52 lb per hand. That covers most presses, rows, curls, and lunges for a home routine, with a base of 14.6 by 8.5 in per dumbbell.

Choose the 8592 if you already press or row more than 50 lb per hand, or plan to. It goes to 92 lb on a base of 19.7 by 8.5 in.

You can also start with the 8552 and add the Expansion Kit later. The kit takes the 8552 to 92 lb per hand, with no tools.

You don't need a rack to use the dumbbells. The bases work on the floor. A rack puts both bases at hand height, which saves your back on every weight change and keeps the floor clear.

The G2 Rack is fixed at 15.9 in and sits on a 32.2 by 23.2 in footprint. The G3 Rack has 7 height settings and locking casters that roll without marking the floor, on a 25.6 by 18.1 in footprint.

We recommend the G3 if you change exercises often or share the set with someone of a different height. The G2 is the simpler, lower cost option.
