PEMF buying guide
A Little Help Choosing Your PEMF Device
A home PEMF device gives you a simple way to add pulsed electromagnetic fields to the recovery or wind down routine you already have. The useful question is not which mat has the biggest number. It is whether you want full body coverage, focused placement on one area, simple guided programs or deeper control over the signal.
Start with the format you will actually use. Then compare frequency, field strength, waveform, coil coverage, controls and warranty together. Clinical research has found benefits for pain, joint stiffness and physical function in several musculoskeletal settings.[1]–[3] This guide translates the technology and the practical differences into a decision you can make at home.
PEMF benefits
Why people add PEMF to their home routine
Support for pain relief
Clinical studies and systematic reviews have reported reductions in pain with PEMF in knee osteoarthritis and shoulder impingement.[1]–[3]
Joint comfort and physical function
Research in osteoarthritis has found improvements in stiffness and physical function, helping explain the growing interest in PEMF for home wellness.[1]
A low effort recovery ritual
Lie on a full body mat or place a smaller applicator around one area while you rest, stretch or wind down.
The first decision
Choose the format first
| Format | What it gives you | Consider it when |
|---|---|---|
| Full body mat | Broad coverage in one lying down session | You want the simplest whole body setup at home |
| Localized applicator | Flexible placement around one area | Focused placement and portability matter more than full body coverage |
| Full body and localized package | Both types of use in one purchase | You want a mat for regular sessions and a second applicator for closer placement |
| PEMF with infrared heat | PEMF and adjustable warmth in the same mat | Heat is part of the experience you want, not an extra you will ignore |
The best first decision is coverage: full body, localized or both.
Four details worth understanding
Read the specifications without getting lost in them
Frequency
Measured in hertz, frequency tells you how often the signal repeats each second. A wider range gives the controller more settings. It does not prove that every frequency has a separate health benefit.
Field strength
Shown in microtesla, millitesla or gauss. One gauss equals 100 microtesla. Compare the unit and where the reading was taken. A larger number is not automatically better.
Waveform and programs
Waveform describes the shape of the signal over time. Presets make the device easier to start using; manual controls allow more adjustment.
Coils and coverage
The coils create the changing magnetic field. Their position and the size of the applicator help explain where the device provides coverage. Coil count is not a quality score by itself.
How to choose
Turn the specifications into four decisions
Decide whether most sessions will be full body, focused on one area or a combination of both.
Guided programs reduce setup. Adjustable frequency, intensity and waveform suit someone who wants more control.
Compare dimensions, weight, folding, power, controller, included applicators and whether heat or light is part of the system.
Check the warranty, return terms, replacement support and who will answer questions after delivery.
Price and ownership
What does a home PEMF device cost?
Price reflects more than the mat surface. Controls, applicators, coil layout, materials and added technologies can all change the total. A package may be better value when you genuinely want both full body and localized use. It is not better value when the extra applicator will stay in the box.
Compare exactly what is included and how each component is covered. The current Kinaura examples below range from a straightforward full body mat to an advanced controller, a multimodal infrared mat and a package with three applicators.
Home setup
Give the mat a realistic place to live
Check the unfolded size as well as how the device folds for storage. Leave a convenient place for the controller and cable. A heavier infrared mat may suit a permanent setup better than frequent moving.
Daily use
Make every feature earn its place
More settings only add value when you want to use them. If a mat includes heat or light, follow the operating and safety guidance for those features as well as PEMF.
Four representative systems
See the differences in real equipment
These examples make the main buying decisions easy to see: guided or advanced control, full body or localized coverage, and dedicated PEMF or a mat that adds infrared heat.

OMI PADS
$1,325
Straightforward full body PEMF
The 65 × 25.6 inch mat folds into four panels and weighs 5.1 pounds. Eight coils, two guided cycles and a manual 1 to 99 Hz program keep the controller approachable without removing adjustment.

OMI Beyond
$1,989.47
More control over the signal
The same 65 × 25.6 inch full body format adds a wireless controller, app control, more than 100 presets, custom programs and multiple waveforms.

Protocol⁴ Ultimate
$3,125
PEMF with adjustable infrared heat
This 74.8 × 31.5 inch mat combines six PEMF coils with far infrared heat adjustable from 77 to 167°F and photon light. At 38.6 pounds, it suits a planned home station.

OMI Full Body and Localized Package
$1,425
Full body and closer placement
The OMI PADS mat comes with an 11 inch OMI Ring and a compact OMI PulsePad. It suits someone who wants broad coverage and smaller formats that are easier to position.

Before you begin
Use the guidance for your exact device
Use the instructions for the product you purchase rather than an internet protocol assembled from several devices. Do not use a PEMF device when its instructions list your condition or implant as a contraindication. OMI instructions specifically contraindicate use with a pacemaker or another implanted electronic device, a cochlear implant, a mechanical heart valve, pregnancy, epilepsy or bleeding. For any other implant or medical condition, confirm compatibility with the exact device guidance and your clinician. Do not change medication or delay medical care because of PEMF.
Kinaura’s current home PEMF mats are presented for general wellness. Whether FDA premarket authorization is required depends on a product’s intended use and classification. Registration or listing is not approval, clearance or authorization. Verify any FDA claim for the exact device and intended use in the FDA database.[4], [5]
Frequently asked questions
PEMF buying FAQs
What is the best type of PEMF device for home use?
For broad coverage, start with a full body mat. For easier placement around one area, consider a localized applicator. A package suits someone who expects to use both. The best format is the one that matches your routine and the level of control you want.
Is a higher intensity PEMF device better?
Not automatically. Intensity is one part of the signal, alongside frequency, waveform, coil layout, distance and session guidance. Compare complete specifications and use the settings provided for the exact device.
What do gauss and microtesla mean?
Both are units used to describe magnetic field strength. One gauss equals 100 microtesla. Keep the unit and measurement position with the number when comparing devices.
Do frequency and waveform matter?
They describe how the signal is delivered, but no single frequency or waveform is universally best for every person or goal. Presets are useful for simplicity; manual settings are useful when you want more control.
Is an infrared PEMF mat the same as a PEMF only mat?
No. An infrared PEMF mat adds heat and sometimes light to the PEMF system. Decide whether you want those experiences together and review the controls and warnings for each feature.
Does a PEMF device need FDA approval?
Whether FDA premarket authorization is required depends on the product’s intended use and classification. Registration or listing is not approval, clearance or authorization. Verify the exact device and intended use in the FDA database.[4], [5]
What should I check in the warranty?
Check its length, the components it covers, exclusions, replacement process and any shipping or handling costs. Every current model shown here lists a one year warranty, but the detailed terms differ.
Can I use PEMF with an implanted medical device?
Do not assume that you can. Follow the instructions for the exact product and consult a qualified healthcare professional before use with a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device.
