Pilates Reformer buying guide
How to Choose a Pilates Reformer for Your Home
A home Reformer brings the carriage, spring resistance and familiar movement patterns of studio practice into your own routine. The right model should feel good in motion and work naturally in the room where you will use it.
Picture that room on a normal Tuesday. Will the Reformer stay ready for a session, fold into storage or stand upright against a wall? From there, carriage fit, spring range and Tower configuration become much easier to judge.

Begin with your routine
Begin with the practice you want at home
A Reformer supports a wide exercise range through a moving carriage, springs, ropes and a footbar. Depending on the movement and spring setting, the carriage can assist, resist or challenge your control.
Think about the sessions you already enjoy. Which footbar positions do you use? How often do you change springs? Does your practice include a box, jump board or Tower work? These details are more useful than a long accessory list.
If Reformer practice is new to you, we recommend learning with qualified guidance. Live online sessions, in person teaching and structured programs can help you understand spring changes, setup and progression.

01 · Space
Measure the working room
Product dimensions show where the frame ends. Your workout uses more space.
Mark the full Reformer footprint on the floor. Leave usable room for the carriage and for your arms and legs to extend beyond the frame. Trace the route from the delivery point to the final room, including doors, corners, stairs and elevators. Allow enough space to assemble the machine where it will stay.
A Tower also makes ceiling height part of the decision. The Nubium Reformer with Tower reaches 79.92 inches in total height. The Lignum Wooden Reformer with Tower has a 76.4 inch Tower.

02 · Storage
Decide where the Reformer will live
A fixed Reformer is ready whenever you have time to practice. A foldable model can return floor space to a multipurpose room. A vertical model reduces the floor area used between sessions.
Compact describes the footprint while the machine is in use. Foldable means the frame changes shape. Vertical storage means the machine is designed to stand upright.
Before choosing storage, picture the complete movement after a session. Check the stored size, equipment weight, wheels and space needed to raise, lower or fold the machine.
Today, compact, foldable and upright models make regular Reformer practice possible in many more home spaces.
Three storage examples
Compact, foldable or upright
The aluminum Domo Compact measures 93.7 × 22.8 × 6.3 inches in use. It shortens to 58.7 × 22.8 × 6.3 inches when flat and stores upright at 58.7 × 22.8 × 19.7 inches. Its five spring set uses one strong, two medium and two light springs.
The maple Foldable Reformer measures 92.52 × 24.02 inches when open. Folded without the footbar, it measures 16.54 × 51.18 × 25.98 inches. With the footbar attached, its folded width increases to 28.74 inches. Its five springs use two strong, two medium and one light spring.
The maple Vertical Reformer measures 92.52 × 24.02 inches when open, with an 11 or 13.98 inch bed height. Its five springs use two strong, two medium and one light spring. Confirm the upright position and clearance on the product page before planning its storage area.

03 · Body fit
Check the fit for your body
Overall length tells you how the machine fits the room. Carriage travel and the working distance between the shoulder rests and footbar tell you more about how it fits you.
Review the positions you use most often. Your legs need a usable range at the footbar, the ropes need to adjust to your proportions and the carriage needs to support your familiar repertoire. Taller users should pay particular attention to carriage travel and rope length.
If several people will use the Reformer, check that its adjustments work for each person and can be changed without turning every session into a setup project.
04 · Everyday touchpoints
Compare the parts you touch every session
Carriage
Look at usable length and width, padding and movement through the rails. The carriage should travel smoothly and return predictably.
Springs
Compare how many are included, their strengths and how closely the combinations match the settings you know. More springs add combinations, but the useful measure is how well those settings serve your practice.
Footbar, ropes and straps
Check the footbar positions, rope adjustment and pulley routing. Confirm which loops, handles and straps are included.
Accessories
A box supports seated, prone and side lying variations. A jump board, platform extender and other accessories serve more specific work. Give priority to the pieces already present in your routine.

05 · Configuration
Choose a standard Reformer or Tower
A standard Reformer centers the practice on the moving carriage, footbar, ropes and springs attached to the frame.
A Reformer with Tower adds a vertical frame with higher spring attachment points and bar work. It expands the available setups while keeping the carriage below. It also increases the machine height and favors a permanent location.
Choose a Tower when those exercises and spring positions are part of the practice you want at home.

06 · Frame
Choose wood or aluminum
Frame material changes the construction and appearance of the machine, especially when it will remain visible between sessions. Judge the complete Reformer as well: carriage, rails, springs, footbar, dimensions, adjustments and warranty.
The Nubium Aluminum measures 98.03 × 30.71 × 14.17 inches. The maple Lignum measures 95.3 × 26.8 × 14.2 inches. Both use five springs.
The aluminum HL1 has a lower profile at 94.5 × 26.4 × 8.7 inches. The Elite Studio combines maple and steel in a 96.46 × 29.92 × 15.75 inch frame.

Real buying questions
Pilates Reformer FAQs
How much space do I need for a Pilates Reformer at home?
Use the assembled dimensions as the starting point. Add room for the carriage and for your arms and legs to extend beyond the frame. Measure the delivery route and assembly area too. The final requirement depends on the model and the exercises you plan to do.
Should I choose a foldable, vertical or fixed Reformer?
Choose around the room after your workout. A fixed Reformer remains ready for use. A foldable model can free more floor area and adds a folding step. A vertical model stands upright between sessions and requires adequate height and a clear path for moving it into position.
Is a foldable Reformer practical to store after every workout?
It can be when its weight, wheels, folded size and folding sequence suit you and the room. Review the complete storage movement before buying. The Foldable Reformer measures 16.54 × 51.18 × 25.98 inches when folded without its footbar.
How do I know if a Reformer will fit my height?
Review carriage travel, usable carriage length, shoulder rest position, footbar adjustment and rope range. Overall frame length mainly describes the room requirement. Working measurements describe how the machine accommodates your body.
What is the difference between a Reformer and a Reformer with Tower?
A standard Reformer uses a moving carriage, footbar, ropes and frame mounted springs. A Tower adds a vertical frame with higher spring positions and bar based exercises. It expands the available setups and requires more height.
Is a wood or aluminum Reformer better for a home?
Frame material alone does not determine the experience. Compare carriage movement, springs, adjustments, dimensions, finish, warranty and support across the complete models. Then choose the construction and appearance you prefer.
Can a home Reformer feel like the one I use in a studio?
A full size model can support the same fundamental carriage and spring based practice. The feel varies with carriage travel, spring response, frame stability, footbar positions and upholstery. Compare those details with the studio equipment you know.
How difficult is a Pilates Reformer to assemble?
Assembly varies by model. Check the shipping pieces, tools, steps, equipment weight and need for another person before ordering. The official Nubium video gives a concrete view of one full size Reformer assembly.
